Bayern Munich beat Manchester United 2-1 Review:

Ivica Olic scores injury-time winner as Bayern Munich beat Manchester United 2-1.

Munich: United got a dose of their own medicine on Tuesday night when Bayern Munich staged a remarkable turnaround to take a 2-1 first leg lead into Old Trafford next week.

Wayne Rooney limped off in the last minute with what looked like a bad ankle injury, making him a major doubt for Saturday’s clash with Chelsea and also for the return leg against Munich 8 days later.

The night had started so well for United as they took the lead after 66 seconds. Right from the kick-off, Michael Carrick’s long ball found Nani on the right, who was needlessly fouled by Martin Demichelis. The Poruguese stood over the set-piece and his free-kick took a deflection off Mark Van Bommel before falling into the box. Rooney turned, Demichelis slipped and the striker volleyed calmly for 34th goal of the season. Advantage Man United.

After this early blow, Bayern started to get in the game, with some swift, short passing, most of the threat coming from the right hand side, curtsey Philipp Lahm and Hamit Altintop.

Bayern had a glorious chance to draw level in the 24th minute, when Franck Ribery floated in a beautiful ball into the box and Altintop, in for the injured Arjen Robben, timed his run to perfection, but failed to control the ball.

Four minutes later came the best chance of the game. Ribery’s cross was beaten away by Van Der Sar and Altintop volleyed across the face of goal, but Olic failed to connect from two yards away.

Bayern keeper Hans-Jorg Butt was tested by both Rooney and Carrick from long-range, but the German had no problems.

United could have been 2-0 up six minutes from half-time when Darren Fletcher’s cross from the left was completely missed by Demichelis and Rooney found himself one-on-one with Butt. But his effort to nutmeg the goalie went in vain, as his shot was blocked by goalkeeper’s leg.

Sir Alex described United’s first-half performance as “ordinary”, after the English only had 40% of the possession.

Bayern started the second-half just as they ended the first. They almost got their equaliser in the 56th minute when Altintop weaved his way past the united defense, but his fiercely-struck shot was directed straight at Van Der Sar.

Van Der Sar was tested again, but the Dutchman caught Van Bommel’s effort comfortably.

Bayern were not to be denied though, and in the 76th minute, Gary Neville gave away a free-kick with a deliberate hand-ball. Ribery stepped up and his low shot deflected off Rooney and into the unguarded net.

United almost regained the lead seven minutes later, when substitute Ryan Giggs’ corner was met by Nemanja Vidic , but the Serbian’s effort rebounded off the crossbar.

Van Der Sar then did well to keep out Mario Gomez’s effort in the 90th minute.

With the match looked to be heading towards a stalemate, Olic stole the ball from Patrice Evra in the dying seconds, side-stepped Ferdinand and calmly slotted home past Van Der Sar.

The Croat got a yellow card for removing his shirt, but it was evident from his face that he didn’t care.

To add insult to injury, it was in that match-winning move that Gomez trod on Rooney’s ankle, only for the Englishman to leave the pitch, writhing in pain.

Rooney left the Allianz Arena on crutches and will have an MRI scan today. Whatever the result, by the looks of it, he will most certainly be out of this week’s table-topping clash against Chelsea and will be a major doubt for the return leg against Bayern next week.

England fans will be hoping though, that their star striker returns in time for the World Cup in the summer.
